Planet Fitness (PFIP LLC) is a fitness center franchiser and operator based in Hampton, New Hampshire. According to the company, it has 2,039 clubs, making it one of the largest fitness club franchises in terms of members and locations. There are franchises in the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Mexico, and Australia. It bills itself as a “Judgement Free Zone” for new and casual gym goers and has received both praise and criticism for its atmosphere. It is said to be the fastest-growing fitness center franchise in the country. Planet Fitness founders Michael and Marc Grondahl purchased a struggling Gold’s Gym franchise in Dover, New Hampshire, in 1992. They eventually closed that first location and added a third partner, current CEO Chris Rondeau. They bought the rights to the name Planet Fitness from Rick Berks in 2002 and renamed their franchise. Berks founded his own Planet Fitness gym in Sunrise, Florida, in 1993, and grew it to three locations, as well as a Gold’s Gym franchise. Berks’ Gold’s Gym catered to the bodybuilding culture. “I decided I didn’t want to deal with that crowd,” he says, “so in 1993, I opened the first Planet Fitness club in Sunrise, Florida.” His daughter’s school project, “Fitness Planet,” inspired the name. The new model aimed to provide a fitness center for the general public. Later, Berks established the first Youfit Health Club in St. Petersburg, Florida. Rondeau and the Grondahls recognized that if they changed the gym environment, both in attitude and format, by creating a non-intimidating, low-cost model, they would be able to serve a much larger segment of the population. Planet Fitness became known as the “Judgement Free Zone,” catering to the average fitness enthusiast rather than the bodybuilder type. They also drastically reduced their prices to compete with more well-known brands. This low-cost business model prioritizes the needs of infrequent or first-time health club members over more experienced members, and it is based on many members rarely showing up. According to a 2014 Planet Money episode, “half of Planet Fitness members never go to their gyms.” Planet Fitness has alienated many serious weightlifters in their effort to create a non-intimidating environment. The gym has a “lunk alarm,” which is a loud siren and rotating light that is activated when a gymgoer grunts too loudly or drops weights. Some bodybuilders and weight lifters have found the way they are portrayed in Planet Fitness TV commercials to be offensive and the way they are treated in Planet Fitness gyms to be “quite possibly discriminatory.” Planet Fitness has been chastised for prohibiting certain weightlifting exercises, such as deadlifts and clean-and-jerks, which many experts believe are extremely effective. Planet Fitness was named the “worst gym in America” by Men’s Health magazine in 2010. As early as March 2015, the “Judgement Free Zone” policy was expanded to allow trans women to use the women’s locker room. According to the policy, “members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.” Planet Fitness opened its first franchised location in Florida in 2003, with Eric Dore and Shane McGuiness. TSG Consumer Partners LLC became an equity partner in the Planet Fitness franchise in the fall of 2013. Michael Grondahl, the co-founder of Planet Fitness, stepped down as CEO, and Chris Rondeau took his place. On August 6, 2015, the company went public. The franchise was added to the Franchise Times’ “Fast and Serious” list of top franchises (#1) in February 2016, and Forbes magazine ranked Planet Fitness #4 in its 2016 franchise ranking. In 2017, it was ranked in the top 50 of Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500. The Classic Membership includes Unlimited Access to Home Club, Free Fitness Training, and Free Wi-FI. The PF Black Card Membership includes the same as the Classic Membership plus the Use of Any Planet Fitness Worldwide, Bring a Guest Anytime, Use of Tanning, Use of HydroMassage, Use of Massage Chairs, Use of Total Body Enhancement, 50% Off Select Drinks, and Premium Perks: Partner & Rewards Discounts. To sign up for a membership, you first need to find the local club. Once you have found and selected the Planet Fitness nearest to you, you will need to select your plan. Pricing varies so during this step is when you will find out how much the plan costs. The Classic plan starts at $10, while the PF Black Card plan is $24.99. There will be a $39 annual fee that will incur as well. There may be a start-up fee for the plan and commitment terms will vary according to plan and location. Special promotional offers may also cause the price and start-up fees to vary as well. After you have selected the location and plan, you will need to fill out pertinent information about yourself. Then, you will need to check out and pay. After you have done that, you are ready to go inside the club and utilize your Planet Fitness membership.

1. Prepare a written or typed letter and request cancellation within it. Provide all of your account info as listed. Sign and date the letter and Keep a copy for your records.
2. Mail your letter, certified, to the address provided to you by the gym
3. Call the phone number for the gym you signed up at or attended most frequently after your letter is received to ensure your account is cancelled
4. Request that the agent provide you with a confirmation number or email
5. Retain any confirmation numbers or emails you receive for your records

3. When asked, give the agent your account information
4. Ask if you are in a contract or free to cancel
