Equifax, also known as Equifax Inc. was founded in 1899 by Cator and Guy Woolford in Atlanta, Georgia under the name Retail Credit Company. Retail Credit Company had offices all over the United States and Canada by 1920. By the 1960s Retail Credit Company became one of the largest credit bureaus servicing millions of customers in the United States and Canada. Even though the company was primarily founded for credit reporting, the majority of its business came from making reports to insurance companies when customers applied for life, auto, fire, and medical insurance. Once Equifax expanded its services to commercial credit reports in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, the insurance reporting division of the company was phased out. In October 2010 Equifax acquired Anakam. In October 2011 Equifax acquired eThority. In February 2016, Equifax acquired Verda, the largest Australian credit reporting agency. In July 2020, Equifax acquired Ansonia and expanded into commercial payment technology solutions. Equifax mainly focuses on the business-to-business sector by selling consumer credit and insurance reports to businesses in a variety of industries including insurance firms, healthcare providers, utilities, government agencies, banks, credit unions, and finance companies. A consumer credit report contains specific information on the individual such as the personal credit and payment history, indicating how they have honored financial obligations such as paying bills or repaying a loan. Credit grantors use this information to decide what sort of products or services to offer their customers, and on what terms. An individual with a better credit score and payment history will likely receive a lower interest rate on a loan or will be offered a higher line of credit than an individual with a poor payment history and lower credit score. Equifax began offering services to the credit consumer sector in 1999, such as credit fraud and identity theft prevention. Equifax also helps consumers make more informed financial decisions whether it be applying for a job or mortgage, financing an education, or buying a car by being able to access their credit report to see their credit score, their outstanding debt, and any accounts that have been sent to collections. Equifax currently employs approximately 14,000 people worldwide.
