Lucille Roberts was an American entrepreneur and businesswoman who founded the Lucille Roberts chain of health clubs. She was a self-described “exercise nut” who turned her passion for working out into a $30 million health club empire at the time of her death. She was born into a Jewish family in Tajikistan and immigrated to the United States in the early 1950s, settling in Brooklyn, New York. As was common at the time, an immigration intake official changed the family’s difficult-to-pronounce names. Laja’s name was changed to Lucille because the young girl reminded her of the television show I Love Lucy. Roberts was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania’s College for Women in 1964 and earn a degree from Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management.
Roberts and her husband opened a spa near Macy’s in midtown Manhattan in 1969. Roberts’ goal was to provide affordable exercise facilities for women. She renamed the gym, Lucille Roberts, in response to the public’s confusion that it was an auto repair shop (the original name of the gym was The Body Shop) and eventually opened gyms in 50 other locations throughout the northeastern United States. Computers and The Lucille Roberts 14-Day Makeover were also written and published by Roberts. Roberts died on July 17, 2003, at the age of 59, from lung cancer in a Manhattan hospital. Her husband, Bob Roberts, and their two children, Kevin and Kirk Roberts survive her.
Lucille Roberts opened her first gym in 1969, inspired by a love of aerobics classes and a dream. She attended what seemed like millions of group aerobics classes before realizing that, while the classes were mostly female, the fitness clubs lacked the camaraderie she craved. Lucille, a pioneer of female empowerment, sought to establish gyms that provided a positive environment for women to work out, make new friends, and be inspired. Lucille Roberts was an inspiration both in and out of the gym; rumor has it she would complete sets of curls while on conference calls and challenge, coworkers to push-up competitions on Fridays.
She opened her first gym near the famed Macy’s flagship at Herald Square, recognizing a gap in the industry and a convenient location accessible to both shoppers and commuters. Lucille’s goal was to provide affordable gyms designed specifically for women who needed to make the most of their gym time. Shopping could be a workout in and of itself, but she knew that women could do so much more than wear shoulder pads and pants suits. As a result, the Lucille Roberts customer was born. She no longer had to maneuver around men lifting weights or spend hundreds of dollars on spa-like memberships to complete a proper workout. Today, Lucille Roberts takes pride in providing the most current, in-demand classes to its busy and informed clientele.
Over time, the gym network grew to nearly 20 locations in the Northeast, and what began as a single, spandex-clad aerobics class evolved into over 100 different and popular classes across their network. Their gyms were acquired by New TSI Holdings, Inc. in 2017. While their family grows, they are committed to providing a healthy environment for future generations of strong, confident women to exercise fearlessly and train victoriously.
Lucille Roberts offers several classes that are taught daily. These classes include Les Mills, Conditioning, Cardio, Cycling, Dance, Kickboxing and Boxing, Mind & Body, and SGT.
