The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or perhaps better known as the ASPCA, is an organization that is focused on the prevention of animal cruelty, as the name implies.
Founded by Henry Bergh, 3 days after the first legislation in the United States related to animal cruelty in April of 1866, the ASPCA is now a household name and commonly known as helpers in emergency or disaster situations such as hurricanes or extreme cases of animal abuse such as puppy mills. For example, as a part of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, the ASPCA granted over $13 million dollars to local shelters and organizations to help the animals in the area.
With all of the hustle and bustle of the modern day, it makes sense to give some of your hard earned money to such a worthy cause, and many do, with the ASPCA’s reports showing nearly $1 million dollars in physical donations such as pet food in 2016 alone.
