Gold’s Gym International, Inc. is an American chain of international co-ed fitness centers (commonly referred to as gyms) founded in Venice Beach, California by Joe Gold. Each gym has a different set of cardio and strength training machines, as well as group exercise programs. The headquarters of Gold’s Gym has moved to Dallas. Joe Gold established the first Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, California, in August 1965, long before the modern health club existed. It was frequented by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dave Draper and featured homemade equipment. It was dubbed “the Mecca of bodybuilding.” In 1970, Gold sold the gym, which was failing at the time, to Bud Danits, a well-known antique dealer, and Dave Saxe, a jeweler. For nearly two years, he and Saxe shared ownership of the gym. They realized that running the gym was not a viable business and decided to close it and reopen the location as an antique shop. They offered to sell it to Ken Sprague, a frequent gym visitor. Sprague bought it in late 1971, which kept the gym open. Sprague was Gold’s first owner to sponsor and hold bodybuilding competitions, and his promotional skills and film industry contacts aided in raising the establishment’s profile. By 1975, when George Butler was planning to film the docudrama Pumping Iron (1977), it was Sprague’s savvy, telling Butler that he would paint the windows over to minimize backlight, and allowing Butler to mount a lighting grid to the inside ceiling, that made Gold’s Gym the primary location for filming Pumping Iron, which brought attention not only to the gym itself but also to bodybuilding and physique in general. Following the film’s release, and in conjunction with the 1977 Mr. America contest and parade held in Santa Monica, both of which were sponsored and conceived of by Sprague, the profile of Gold’s gym grew even higher. Mr. America that year received more press requests than the 1977 Academy Awards. When Sprague sold Gold’s Gym in 1979, it was the most famous gym in the world. Gold’s Gym is still regarded as a landmark in bodybuilding culture and has achieved cult status. Peter Grymkowski (Mr. World’s bodybuilding champion) and his partners owned Gold’s Gym from 1979 to 1999. They moved from a 5500-square-foot facility to a 60,000-square-foot building over six years after two years of ownership. When the company was sold to private equity firm Brockway Moran & Partners in 1999, Grymkowski’s brother became the licensing director, helping to expand the Gold’s Gym brand from one location to over 534 across the United States and the world. TRT Holdings, another private equity firm, purchased Gold’s Gym in 2004. RSG Group, a German fitness company, will acquire Gold’s in August 2020. Beginning in 1980, Gold’s Gym was one of the first companies in the health and fitness industry to a franchise. The brand is licensed for products such as fitness equipment and clothing. The original Gold’s Gym logo, depicting a bald weightlifter holding a barbell, was created in 1973 by professional wrestler Ric Drasin, who trained Schwarzenegger for four years. Celebrities who have used Gold’s Gym include Jessica Alba, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Dwayne Johnson, Jim Morrison, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, and Tiger Woods, among many others. ESPN considers the original Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach to be a national sports landmark, and it is included on its list of the 100 most important sports venues. Gold’s Gym is a privately owned business. In 2004, Robert Rowling’s TRT Holdings purchased it from its previous owner, private equity firm Brockway Moran & Partners, for approximately $158 million. Brockway Moran paid more than $50 million for the company in 1999. The company’s headquarters are located in the Dallas metropolitan area. Since its first international location opened in Canada in 1985, Gold’s Gym has grown its global franchising program to include nearly 180 international gyms in Russia, India, Australia, Costa Rica, Japan, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Peru, Indonesia, Spain, Poland, Venezuela, Mongolia, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2016, 58 new Gold’s Gym locations were opened around the world. The company opened its first location in Amman, Jordan, in 2017.
