ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy. often referred to as ABCmouse.com or ABCmouse, is a subscription-based digital education program for children ages 2 to 8, created by Age of Learning, Inc. Members of Age Learning, Inc.’s curriculum board include Kimberly Oliver Burnim, who won the 2006 National Teacher of the Year Award, Dr. Rebecca Palacio, who was a 2014 National Teachers Hall of Fame inductee, and Stephen M. Tomecek, who is a NORC Research Scientist and Science Writing Award-winning writer. Subscribers can access learning activities on the ABCmouse.com website or mobile app. Subjects covered include reading and language arts, math, science, health, social studies, music, and art. ABCmouse was founded in 2007 by Doug Dohring in Glendale, California, and is currently led by CEO Paul Candland. In 2016, ABCmouse launched ABCmouse for Schools, and ABCmouse for School won an ISTE Best of Show Award at the annual tech conference. In 2020 ABCmouse added an ABCmouse Classroom Live! feature that offers a daily interactive virtual classroom experience led by teachers offering curriculum-based activities for Pre-K and Kindergarten students.
ABCmouse offers subjects such as Reading and Language Arts, Math, The World Around Us, and Arts and Colors. The reading curriculum in the Reading and Language Arts includes uppercase and lowercase letter recognition, phonics, rhyming, word families, more than 450 books for beginning readers, sentence structure, and parts of speech, writing and language skills, sentence structure and punctuation, parts of speech, and practice with writing genres. The Math curriculum includes recognizing and counting numbers 1 – 20, the base ten system, place value, addition and subtraction, names and attributes of 2D and 3D structures, length, time, money measurement, shapes, and patterns. The science and social studies curriculum in The World Around Us includes the body and health, plants and animals, weather, climate, the seasons, Earth’s environments, maps, regions of the United States, the Solar System, and matter and its properties. The Arts and Colors curriculum includes primary and secondary colors, shades of colors, paint-by-number activities, and number and letter dot-to-dots. ABCmouse also offers a supplemental homeschool curriculum which includes books, games, puzzles, and learning videos.ABCmouse appeals to young children by presenting its curriculum in a fun way using animations, games, books, songs, puzzles, art, and printables. Other features are progress tracking so parents can see how their children are progressing in their activities. The progress tracker displays the total number of learning activities completed in each category (books, songs, puzzles, games, and art), easy-to-read graphs that show progress both by academic level and by curriculum subject. ABCmouse incentivizes children to complete activities by offering rewards and tickets. The child can earn tickets to purchase items in the virtual store and it even teaches them math by tracking their rewards and tickets earned. Children can also customize their avatar which represents themselves while playing ABCmouse. They can choose from different features such as skin tone, hair color, eye color, and clothing. They are also able to purchase additional customization options using tickets they have earned. There is also an interactive zoo where children can interact with realistic virtual animals they would usually find in a zoo such as elephants, lions, monkeys, zebras, and penguins. There is also an interactive aquarium wherein the children can choose the fish and other accessories to put in their virtual classroom aquarium. They can learn interesting fish facts while playing with their fish. The interactive farm allows children to interact with virtual farm animals such as horses, chickens, cows, and other animals. The interactive farm teaches the children facts about farm animals and farm life while playing.
Children can access ABCmouse through a computer, or tablet, or with a mobile app that is available through the App Store or Google Play. ABCmouse offers 3 different subscriptions – monthly, short-term, and annual. All plans are ad-free as ABCmouse does now allow third-party marketing. The monthly subscription is $12.99 per month and is billed monthly until canceled. The short-term subscription is $29.99 for 6 months and is billed every 6 months until canceled. The annual subscription is $59.99 per year and is billed annually until canceled. Parents, guardians, and teachers can customize their child or student’s learning experience. When the account is first set up, the adult will set the child’s learning experience based on their age or academic level. The child will not move to the next learning level until they complete all their learning activities. On the other hand, if the child accelerates through the program, they may be on a level that is above their age or grade level.ABC is designed to ensure that children receive the educational activities that are relevant to them.
