Old Republic Home Protection offers a wide range of optional coverages, addressing common appliances, like washing machines and refrigerations, along with coverage for more specialized home components, like ornamental fountains. It also has separate plans to cover your home’s tech, including computers, gaming systems, and smart home devices. Old Republic Home Protection has combination plans covering a mix of appliances and home systems. Pricing and plan structures vary by state, but Old Republic Home Protection provides sample brochures on its website outlining the options available in each. Most plans are renewed on an annual basis, though two-year plans are also available in many states. A service fee is paid each time you request a contractor, which is standard with all home warranty policies. Old Republican’s fee starts at $75 and varies by state. Compared to other companies in our rating, $75 is on the low end for this cost. Old Republic Home Protection has a network of contractors to use when you request service. However, customers in certain states that have the Freedom Plan get the option to choose their own contractor. A shorter payment period option is only available after the first year of coverage. Old Republic Home Protection also does not offer plans that separately cover only built-in home systems or only household appliances. Old Republic Home Protection does offer real estate and home seller-specific plans alongside its more comprehensive homeowner plans. It also offers plans for multi-unit buildings and reduced-price options for condos and mobile homes.
In the majority of states, plans break down into Essential, Standard, Ultimate, and Platinum tiers. Essential and Standard plans are virtually the same, with the exception that Essential plans don’t cover washers, dryers, and refrigerators. Both of these basic tiers include coverage for heating system components, plumbing, and water-related elements, and electrical systems. They also cover a number of kitchen appliances, including dishwashers, garbage disposals, oven stovetops, trash compactors, and built-in microwaves. Standard plans in certain states may include limited pest protection. With some exceptions, Essential plans typically start around $400 per year, depending on your location. Standard plans also tend to start at $400, though there’s quite a range: Standard exceeds $600 per year in several states and starts below $300 in a number of others. Ultimate plans include everything that Standard plans to offer and add the following coverages – recapture, reclamation and disposal of refrigerant, code upgrades and permits, haul-away, cranes, mismatched systems, and improper installation. Platinum plans build on Ultimate by offering coverage for modifications (with additional code upgrades), as well as more extensive coverage for the following areas – plumbing items and stoppages, manufacturer’s warranty, zone controls, specific heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, ultimate with W/D/R and Platinum with W/D/R are advertised as plans of their own alongside the three main tiers. Ultimate plans often start around $500 per year but may start much higher depending on your location. Only some plans start under $500, depending on the state and whether or not coverage for washers, dryers, and kitchen refrigerators is included with the plan. Platinum plans tend to fall above $600, though there are always exceptions, including northern Arizona’s Platinum plan starting at only $450. In a smaller number of states, Old Republic’s home warranty plans are billed under the name Freedom Plan, in which three coverage tiers are labeled Patriot Plan, Liberty Plan, and Freedom Plan. These tiers roughly align with Standard, Ultimate, and Platinum, though they are priced differently. Some Old Republic customers may be offered optional Total Care, which covers external plumbing and increases the coverage limit for slab leaks by up to $1,000. These benefits are available for any plan in any state.
