Amnesty International is a London-based non-profit organization that supports human rights. The organization was founded in July 1961. The founder was Peter Benenson. The organization focuses on legal advocacy, media attention, direct-appeal campaigns, research, and lobbying. Their main goal is to protect human rights. There are currently more than seven million members and supporters. The Secretary-General of the organization is Kumi Naidoo. Amnesty International has the third longest history and broadest name recognition, setting the standard for the human rights movement as a whole.
The organization currently serves members in East Africa, Southern Africa, Western and Central Africa, Central America, the Caribbean, North America, South America, East Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, and the Pacific. They currently offer support in various areas, including Armed Conflict, Arms Control, Corporate Accountability, Death Penalty, Detention, Disappearances, Discrimination, Freedom of Expression, Indigenous Peoples, International Justice, Living in Dignity, Refugees, Asylum-Seekers and Migrants, Sexual and Reproductive Rights, Torture, United Nations, and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The organization pushes change by researching the violations, advocating and lobbying to convince decision-makers to do the right thing, and starting campaigns, protests, and petitions.
