FasTrak is an electronic toll collection system. The system is used in California on toll roads, toll bridges, high-occupancy toll lanes along the California Freeway and Expressway System. The first ETC system was installed in Dallas, Texas in 1989. In 1990, California State Legislature passed Senate Bill 1523 to allow Caltrans to develop the system for the Freeway and Expressway System. It was not until the late 1990s that the systems were officially ready to launch.

There are nearly two dozen toll facilities utilizing FasTrak. The Antioch Bridge goes from Antioch to Sacramento County. The Benicia-Martinez Bridge goes from Martinez to Benicia. The Carquinez Bridge goes from Crockett to Vallejo. The Dumbarton Bridge goes from Fremont to Menlo Park. The Golden Gate Bridge goes from Marin County to San Francisco. The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge goes from Richmond to San Rafael. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge goes from Oakland to San Francisco. The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge goes from Hayward to Foster City. There are four toll roads in the area. Eastern Toll Road goes from Irvine to SR 91. Foothill Toll Road goes from Oso Parkway to SR 133. The San Joaquin Hills Toll Road goes from I-5 to Bison Ave. The South Bay Expressway goes from SR 905 to SR 54.

Additionally, there are seven express lanes that are high-occupancy toll lanes. By 2023, there are five more express lanes that have been proposed and planned. They will be located in San Diego County, Santa Clara County, Riverside County, Contra Costa County, and Orange County.

Each FasTrak agency has their own monthly fees. Some charge monthly minimums. Some also charge a price per transponder. With most accounts, there is an account maintenance fee.
