About Glassdoor

Glassdoor, also known as Glassdoor, Inc., is an American website where current and former employees anonymously review companies. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, it has additional offices in Chicago, Dublin, London, and San Paulo. Glassdoor also allows its users to anonymously submit and view salaries as well as search and apply for jobs on its platform. In 2018, the company was acquired by the multinational firm Recruit Holdings for $1.2 billion, and it continues to operate as an independent subsidiary. The company was co-founded in 2007 by Tim Besse, Robert Hohman, who serves as the company’s CEO, and Expedia founder Rich Barton, who served as the company’s chairman. As revealed in a 2014 article in the New York Times, the idea came from a brainstorming session between Barton and Hohman, when Barton relayed the story of accidentally leaving the results of an employee survey on the printer while working at Expedia, when the two began to think about what would have happened if the results had gotten out into the public. The two hypothesized that if the material had been revealed publicly, it could have been a service to those looking to make career decisions. The company’s headquarters were established in Mill Valley, California. Glassdoor produces reports based upon the data collected from its users, on topics including work life balance, CEO pay ratios, lists of the best office places and cultures, and the accuracy of corporate job searching maxims. Data from Glassdoor has also been used by outside sources to produce estimates on the effects of salary trends and changes on corporate revenues. Glassdoor also puts the conclusions of its research of other companies towards its own company policies. In 2015, Tom Lakin produced the first study of Glassdoor in the United Kingdom, concluding that Glassdoor is regarded by users as a more trustworthy source of information than career guides or official company documents. In April 2013, Glassdoor won a Red Herring North America Award for Social Media Innovation. Glassdoor offers three types of accounts: job seeker accounts, student accounts, and employer accounts. The best part is that they are all free. Glassdoor’s free job seeker account gives you unlimited access to all the content on our site, including company, interview, salary, and benefits reviews plus thousands of available jobs. Obtaining 12 months of unlimited access is free. All you have to do is submit an anonymous review of your own. After that 12-month period is up, you will be asked to write another contribution in order to extend your access for another year. You can create a new job seeker account with an active email address or by signing in with your Facebook, Apple, or Google credentials. If you are a current US student and do not have any work-related content to contribute, you can create a free Glassdoor account using a valid student (.edu) email address. The student account will provide 12 months of unlimited access to all of Glassdoor’s great content. If you are an employer, chances are high that your company will eventually be listed on Glassdoor. Creating a free Employer Account will enable you to see employee insights, view and respond to reviews, update your company information, and build your brand. Typically, Glassdoor approves individuals in HR, marketing, operations, and executive positions for free Employer Accounts. Branch offices and franchise locations must have corporate approval for an employer account. In some cases, Glassdoor may request more information from others in your organization before granting approval. Glassdoor also offers a paid membership for employers. In order to obtain pricing for the paid membership, you must contact Glassdoor’s sales team. Glassdoor’s customer service department can be contacted by phone, email, or via a contact form.
