People Magazine is a magazine published weekly by Dotdash Meridith. Its headquarters is located at 1716 Locust St, Des Moines, IA 50309. It was founded in 1974 by Andrew Heiskell, who at the time was the chief executive officer of Time, Inc. and the former publisher of Life Magazine. The founding manager of People Magazine was Richard Stolley, a former assistant managing editor at Life. The first publisher of People Magazine was Richard J. “Dick” Durrell. People Magazine focuses on celebrity news and human interest stories. Richard Stolley even described the magazine as “getting back to the people who are causing the news and who are caught up in it, or deserve to be in it. Our focus is on people, not issues.” This is believed to be the contributing factor to the magazines’ success. When People Magazine was first published, it was only sold in newsstands or supermarkets. It is now available online in a digital format. People Magazine’s first edition, published for the week of March 4, 1974, featured actress Mia Farrow on the cover. The cover was the only part of People Magazine that was printed in color. The rest of the magazine was printed in black-and-white. The selling price was $0.35, which is equivalent to $1.92 in 2021. In 1996, People Magazine expanded to the Latino demographic with a version entitled People en Espanol. People en Espanol soon became its publication with original content instead of an English-to-Spanish translation of People Magazine. In 1998, the magazine introduced a version targeted at teens called Teen People. People Magazine is known for creating competition categories for celebrity photos. Some of the categories include Sexiest Man Alive (Richard Gere, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Johnny Depp won twice), Sexiest Woman Alive, Sexiest Couple Alive, Cutest Baby Alive, Most Intriguing People of the Year, and 100 Most Beautiful People (Michelle Pfeiffer, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate Hudson won twice and Julia Roberts won 5 times). People Magazine also publishes the People Magazine Yearbook, which covers all the major events that happened within that previous publication year, including socially relevant news events around the world, but more specifically in the United States. It also covers celebrity weddings, celebrity breakups, births, deaths, and scandals. The People Magazine Yearbook was first published in 1991, and it was called Private Lives. The next issue of The People Magazine Yearbook was titled Private Lives Volume II. The 1993 publication of The People Magazine Yearbook was titled Private Lives 1993 and continued with that title for consecutive years until 1996. In 1996, the title Private Lives was dropped, and it was simply renamed as People Yearbook (year). People Magazine’s Yearbook has covered events from the previous year and not the year on the front cover since it was first published, even when it was called Private Lives. For example, the People Magazine Yearbook 2003 covered events of 2002. 2014 was the last year for this to happen. The 2014 yearbook covered all significant events that happened in 2013. However, in 2015, for the first time in 25 years, a shift happened in the magazine changed for the first time the year it covered. Instead of covering the events of 2014, this issue covered the events of 2015 and arrived on the stands towards the end of 2015. To make the change clear to customers, the first page of this yearbook included a tagline, “The Most Memorable Moments of 2015”. This change, however, resulted in the year 2014 never being covered by the People Magazine Yearbook. Since then, the People Magazine Yearbook has been covering events of the same year that are on the Front Page. The 2016 Yearbook was a special flip cover issue that contained a special edition to honor the memories of people who passed away in 2016. The special edition could be accessed by flipping over the magazine. In November 2017, Meredith Corporation acquired Time Inc. and changed the copyright of the 2018 Yearbook to read as belonging to Time Inc. Books, a division of Meredith Corporation and published by People Books, an imprint of Time Books. This issue included the tagline, “The Most Memorable Moments of 2018,” on the cover. However, in the 2019 Yearbook, the copyright read as belonging to Meredith Corporation without any tagline.
People Magazine is available in both a print and digital subscription. The print edition is available at many retailers, mostly grocery stores, in either the magazine section or near the checkout lanes, and the digital subscription is available online. If you purchase a single magazine at a retailer, you will pay approximately $6.99 per issue. However, if you sign up for a subscription, you will pay $0.50 per issue, and it will be delivered straight to your doorstep weekly. Another perk of a subscription is that you will have access to a digital issue while you are waiting for your print copy to arrive.
