AOL (stylized as AOL., formerly a company known as AOL Inc. and originally known as America Online) is a New York City-based American web portal and online service provider. It is a brand promoted by Yahoo! Inc.’s current incarnation. The service can be traced back to an online service called PlayNET. Quantum Link (Q-Link), which went online in November 1985, licensed PlayNET’s software. In 1988, IBM launched a new PC client, which was later renamed America Online in 1989. In May 1983, Jim Kimsey joined Control Video, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. Kimsey was brought in by his West Point friend and company investor Frank Caufield. Von Meister left the company in early 1985. Kimsey shifted the company’s strategy and, in 1985, launched Quantum Link, a dedicated online service for Commodore 64 and 128 computers (“Q-Link” for short).
