About First American Home Buyers Protection
A First American Home Warranty, also known as First American Home Warranty Corporation, is a renewable yearly service contract that protects a home’s systems and appliances from unexpected repair or replacement costs due to a breakdown. First American Home Warranty is a subsidiary of First American Home Warranty Corporation of Florida and its parent company is First American Financial. First American Home Warranty ranks No. 7 in our Best Home Warranty Companies of 2022 rating. Established in 1984, First American serves more than 625,000 customers across the United States except for Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin. Since 2000, First American Home Warranty has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau and has earned a C rating.
When a covered item breaks, First American will send a pre-screened service contractor to your home to diagnose and repair or replace the item. Home warranties generally cover systems such as heating, air conditioning, and plumbing, and appliances like dishwashers, ovens, clothes washers/dryers, refrigerators, and more. Homeowners’ insurance does not typically cover mechanical failures, so a home warranty can help bridge the gap.
First American Home Warranty offers 3 plans, Starter, Essential, and Premium. The Starter plan covers plumbing systems, electrical systems, heating systems, dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, cooktop, and built-in microwave oven. The Starter Plan starts at $36.67 per month or $440.00 per year and includes an $85.00 service fee. The Essential plan covers plumbing systems, electrical systems, heater systems, dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, cooktop, built-in microwave oven, clothes washer, dryer, water heater, air conditioning, and garage door opener. The Premium plan covers, plumbing systems, electrical systems, heating systems, dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, cooktop, built-in microwave oven, clothes washer, dryer, water heater, air conditioning, garage door opener, luxury appliance coverage, garbage disposal, full garage door system, faucets, instant hot water dispenser, and additional coverage and enhancements. You can add optional coverage for items such as pools and spas, well pumps, and additional refrigeration. You can purchase upgraded coverage for haul away of the old appliance or system, correction of failures caused by improper installations, building permits, and correction of building code violations. The Premium plan starts at $52.92 per month or $635.00 per year and includes an $85.00 service fee. On the plus side, military service members can get a discount. First American offers a $25 discount off of its Basic plan to active or former U.S. military personnel.
First American Home Warranty has a 30-day waiting period before service can be requested, which is standard in the home warranty industry. To request service, you can either call First American or submit your request online, and both options are available 24/7. You will be put in touch with a service technician who will arrive at your home, make sure your repair is covered, and begin the repair process. At the time of repair, your service fee is due. If a covered system or appliance breaks down, policyholders of a First American Home Warranty service contract have a few options for filing a service request. The most convenient way to make a claim is to log into the First American Home Warranty Account Center and explain the issues you are experiencing. Typically, a technician will contact a homeowner within 48 hours to set up a mutually convenient appointment. Once on the property, the expert will diagnose the problem and determine if a repair or replacement is necessary. At this time, the customer will pay the set service fee. There is no limit to the number of times you can request service during your contract. Many of our customers request service multiple times each year and save hundreds to thousands of dollars in repair and replacement bills. Plans are transferrable. If you decide to move or sell your house, you can transfer your plan to the new owner. First American Home Warranty covers up to $3,500 per home appliance, which is higher than many other home warranty companies. First American Home Warranty also has some coverage limits outlined in its plans. According to the warranty contract, all the components required for the equipment to function correctly are included in the plan’s coverage. Laundry and kitchen appliances have a coverage limit of $3,500 per item. Plumbing is covered up to $500 per plan term. Most heating, air conditioning, and ductwork do not have a preset coverage cap, but water heater and heating system combinations are limited to $1,500.
The service department is available by phone at 1-800-992-3400. You can call the service department to request service, modify your service request, or cancel your service request.
First American Home Warranty has been in the industry for more than three decades. Although plans include some exclusions, the company’s add-on coverage allows customers to tailor the warranty to fit their needs.
