Intelius had some controversy in 2008 after legal threats and negative press shined the light on the difficult opt-out process for removing information from the site. The phone directory services were discontinued as they were criticized for storing private cell phone numbers. Also, at the end of September 2009, a class action lawsuit was filed. It alleged that Intelius automatically registered consumers in California into a partner-owned program named Adaptive Marketing without their permission. On the 19th of October 2009, the Federal Court in Seattle, Washington decided on a class-action lawsuit filed by two plaintiffs accusing Intelius of breaching the Consumer Protection Act of Washington. In Lee V. Intelius, they sued for damages alleging that Intelius used deceptive practices like charging recurring $19.95 monthly charges that were not requested by the plaintiffs. On the 7th of March 2013, The District Court of the United States ruled in favor of the plaintiffs. After losing the appeal, Intelius and the plaintiffs went into arbitration.
