Ancestry.com LLC is a Utah-based American genealogy company. It is the world’s largest for-profit genealogy company, operating a network of genealogical, historical records, and related genetic genealogy websites. In November 2018, the company stated that it had provided customers with access to approximately 10 billion historical records, had 3 million paying subscribers, and had sold 18 million DNA kits. According to the company, by 2022, this figure will have risen to 30 billion records. The Blackstone Group purchased the company for $4.7 billion on December 4, 2020. Paul Brent Allen (not to be confused with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen or Allen Holdings CEO Paul Allen) and Dan Taggart, two Brigham Young University graduates, founded Infobases in 1990 and began offering Latter-day Saints (LDS) publications on floppy disks. Allen had worked at Folio Corporation in 1988, which was founded by his brother Curt and his brother-in-law Brad Pelo. The first products sold by Infobases were floppy disks and compact disks from the back seat of the founders’ car. Infobases was named one of the 500 fastest-growing companies by Inc. magazine in 1994.
