Graze (stylized as graze) is a snack company based in the United Kingdom that is owned by Unilever. Graze sells over 200 snack combinations via snack subscription boxes, an online store, and retailers. Every day, the company distributes thousands of snack boxes across the United Kingdom. In 2013, Graze expanded its operations to include the United States, and in 2016, it launched snacks in US retailers.
Graze was founded in 2008 by seven friends brought together by LoveFilm founder Graham Bosher. Throughout the United Kingdom, the company began delivering snacks such as nuts, small puddings, and porridge. The Carlyle Group acquired the majority stake in Graze in November 2012.
In July 2015, Graze announced the launch of a snack product line to UK retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Boots UK, and WHSmith. Graze was named to the Sunday Times Fast Track 100, a list of Britain’s top 100 fastest-growing companies, in 2015. Graze launched an online shop for one-time purchases outside of the snack subscription model in 2016, and began selling a variety of their snacks in Walgreens stores across the United States. Graze offers both sweet and savory snacks. Many of the products are vegan-friendly.
Unilever acquired Graze in February 2019. Graze subscribers in the United States were notified in August 2019 that their subscriptions would expire in September. The Graze website store had no products for sale and no pending orders as of September 2019, and it had reverted to a UK-only website by December 2019. The company has not stated publicly why it has ceased operations in the United States.
Graze customizes snack boxes based on the preferences subscribers enter on the site using an algorithm called DARWIN (Decision Algorithm Rating What Ingredient Next). Graze creates its own recipes that are free of genetically modified ingredients, artificial flavors and colors, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats. Variety boxes can be delivered weekly, biweekly, or monthly and contain four or eight snacks. Larger sharing bags and multipacks can be purchased ad hoc on graze’s online store.
Graze donates a portion of its referral profits to the Graze School of Farming charity, which works to alleviate global poverty through the Graze School of Farming in Kabubbu, Uganda. The farm teaches students how to farm and care for fruit trees in order to provide income to low-income families.
